Safer Homes

Every one thinks that homes are the safest places for the family. But your children might be in a greater danger in your own house. Many hazards are in side and around the house. However, the most dangerous hazard in the house is the poisoning materials. In this report I will explain the danger of the poisonous materials in homes, how to store them and what to do in case of any child swallowed a poison.

It’s very important to know what the poisoning materials are. Poisoning materials are almost every where in the house. About 90% of poisoning happens at homes by common household products (World of Health). Some common household hazards are drug-medication, personnel cleaning materials, drain cleaners, pesticides, windshield washer solution, toilet bowl cleaner and many other petroleum products. These hazards in some cases are stored in improper places and can be reached by children easily. However, some parents store dangerous chemicals next to food, this act might be extremely dangerous as many brand names packages look alike (USA Today). Medication can be harmful, used improperly or taken in a large quantity (Travisano).

Sixty percent of all accidental poisoning cases happen with children six years and under (USA Today). Therefore, to eliminate the hazards and potential poisoning to children, some steps should be taken over by parents. Keep all poisoning materials and chemicals out of reach of children. Keep all drugs, medications and vitamins in locked cabinets and out of reach of children and never tell a child they are candies (Travisano). An effective solution is to use child-resistant locks on cabinets that contain household chemical material like cleaning products and petroleum products. Also never change the original product container or battle because it will be very difficult to parents and health care provider to recognize the product and to treat the child (USA Today).

If a child has swallowed poisons, parents should calm down and start looking for telltale signs like spills, odors, stains and changes in behaviors. Next, they should check the child’s mouth for tablets, powder, cuts, burns and odors before rinsing out the child’s mouth with water (USA Today). The final step is to call the emergency services and be prepared to answer question such as child’s age, weight, material swallowed, when, how much, and how the child is acting.

In conclusion, poisonous products are every where around us. But knowing these dangerous products and keeping them away from children is the only way to reduce the danger around our kids. Never encourage kids to use chemicals or be in the storing areas alone. A safer home is all about taking care and doing the right action to save our kids.

Pollution solutions

Lyle Prescott wrote about the pollution in Ranger Rick magazine. The air pollution has grown all over the world. Factories and automobiles are making it worst. Scientists are trying to invent cars that pollute less and experiments on cleaner fuels are going on (Prescott). The world is fighting the air pollution and the solution is to make tougher laws. Sulfate that puffs out of coal burning is mixed with clouds. However, the acid rains falls harming rivers and lakes (Prescott). Most Lakes, River and bays are polluted because of the runoff which is mixed with wasted chemicals and acid rains. But solutions are developing quickly. Some rivers have been cleaned and there are plans to clean many others. Burning coal and oil for energy causes pollution but a cleaner and renewable energy can be produced from sun and winds (Prescott). Farmers spray chemicals called “pesticide” on crops for protection. The pesticide causes health problems as it ends in our food. The daily trash is another pollution problem but most companies started recycling.
Many people are trying to reduce the pollution and by the time the world will be clean again.

Air Pollution

Many studies and researches have showed that the greenhouse effect has incredibly increased. It’s also known as Global Warming effect. Air pollution is one of the main reasons of this phenomenon. I’ll discuss how air pollution can lead to the greenhouse effect and then I will mention some solutions followed by my opinion.

Factories, industries, gas plants, cars and many other major factors can lead to air pollution, but how does air pollution lead to global warming? The increase of the world population has forced governments to use all the possible energy sources to provide the life needs. However, these sources are too harmful to the nature as they pollute the air and devastate green yards. The huge amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere keeps the earth warming. Moreover, it breaks the O-zone layer which protects the earth from many harmful radiations coming from the sun (Lerner).

Smog is caused by the released gasses from the factories and gas plants and it is one of the major factors of air pollution. These gasses are damaging the ozone layer in the atmosphere. This chemical reaction allows the harmful ultraviolet radiation to reach the earth surface. The more exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, the more chances of genetic damages with various cancers especially skin cancer (Lerner). Moreover, these radiations increase the temperature of the air and the earth.

Smog was not caused by the gas operation industries only; it’s also caused by the gasses emitted by the vehicles as well. Most of the people are using their private transportation methods. The world’s population has increased and the number of transportation machines has increased as well. This can lead to a greater chance of having air pollution from many directions. First, from the start of building these machines in the factory until the day it’s on the road. Some investigations was carried in 1950 has pointed that motor vehicles is the primary source of Los Angeles air pollution (Discovering US History). The high demand of fossil oil is increasing keeping the oil industries to burn more of the unwanted gasses. However these gasses are generating a chemical reaction in the air and building smog around the earth.

Many solutions are pointed from the experts and the scientists around the word. A possible solution to reduce these gasses is to change the sources of energy in to renewable sources. Using new technologies to recycle the unwanted gasses also can count as an effective solution as well. Banning the leaded gasoline in United States has resulted a 98% of decrease of toxic lead in the atmospheric concentration (Lerner). Encouraging people to use public transportation will reduce the number of motor vehicles on the roads. The biodiesel is one of the fuels that can be used as a substitute for petroleum fuel (Wagner). Hybrid cars are a result of a better use of technology for a sustainable future (Wagner). Another solution is by educating people about the danger of global warming. That can help the health and environmental organizations to fight for a better healthy life.

In conclusion, a main cause of global warming effect is the air pollution which is breaking down the Ozone layer. In order to reduce the carbon emissions in the air, renewable energy sources and new technologies could be used. In my point of view, governments must put new laws to control the carbon emissions in the atmosphere. We should consider building cool cities and limiting the number of vehicles as well. Also encourage people to use the public transportation especially in the crowded cities. Putting all the efforts together is highly needed from every one to eliminate air pollution.

Cool Cities

Abu Dhabi has one of the world’s biggest carbon footprints. Masdar city in Abu Dhabi could be a solution to that problem but it is not enough. Cool cities are designed to be zero-carbon, zero-waste and car free cities. In order to reduce the carbon dioxide, cool cities like Masdar city are powered by renewable energy sources. However, these types of projects are not practical for many reasons. The most two logical reasons are the cost and the capacity of these cities.

The first reason is the huge cost of the project. Masdar city costs about $22 billion to build (BBC News). Abu Dhabi’s government can offer that but for other poor countries it is impossible. This huge amount of money can be used to develop many other existing cities, factories and landscapes that can help to reduce the carbon dioxide. Also it can be used to develop new technologies to replace the old factories which contaminate the environment.

The second logical reason is the capacity of the cool cities. These cities can provide all the needed facilities and the most luxury lifestyle to their inhabitants. However, this life can only be provided for a limited number of people. Only 47,500 people can live in Masdar city (CNET News). This is not practical as many other people will stay in their existing cities. By the time, the number of people in any cool city will increase. And also the consumption of energy will keep increasing too.

It is a good thing to build a cool city like Masdar city. But the cost is too high and also the capacity of these cities is not enough. Therefore, solving the pollution problem is not by building cool cities. Finding the core of the problem is the first step to have a good living planet.

Carbon Footprint

How can we know how much our energy demand effects the environment? The carbon footprint is measured by different categories to find out the consumption of energy for each and individual person. The consumption depends on the person’s lifestyle and human demand effect the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. However, these measurements are related to one consumer only. In this report I will discuss these measurements and then I’ll compare my results with other consumers.

In order to know my footprint I had to go through two different websites meant to calculate footprints. Each website has its own question and style to do the calculations. However, these websites has many similarities in the concept of simulating these calculations. I calculated my results by answering few questions in four sections food, home, travel and stuff. These represent my lifestyle and show how the energy demands need. My average result was 3.095 planets. That means if every one on earth will have the same lifestyle I live with; then we will need 3 planets to survive. My main consumption was in cooling and IT.

I compared my results with two of my class mates and I found some similarities in our demand of energy. The first consumer was Nasser Al Hammadi; his average result was 2.5 planets. His main consumption of energy was in cooling and IT. The second consumer was Abdull Rahman Almarzouqi and his average result was 2.17 planets and his main energy consumption was in cooling and IT. This due the same environment we are living in. in the United Arab Emirates the weather is usually hot and dry. So many people consume more energy in cooling.
My recommendation about this high energy demand is to change my lifestyle and try to be more environmental friendly. However, these actions will change many things in my life but I hope it will help the earth in the future.

An Inconvenient Truth

Life on earth is in mortal danger. This is the main idea behind the An Inconvenient truth movie. This movie has shown how serious the global warming effect is. Al Gore has proven with many evidences the relation between the increasing of temperature with the carbon dioxide. However, some writers think that the movie is more political rather than being a documentary movie. This essay will examine some arguments for and against the movie.

One writer is against Al Gore and pointed in his review that this movie is political as it gives Bush’s administration a hard time by their disastrous environmental records (Wesley). Al Gore uses this film as a platform for the 2008 presidential run (Wesley).

A positive point of view about the movie is that the An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary movie shows the effect of global warming on our planet (Scott). It is a necessary film to educate the people in how big the global warming effect is (Scott). Al Gore has proven that the life on earth is in danger. All the evidences and figures shown in the movie are good enough to convince the audiences.

In my point of view about this realistic movie is that; this movie was well made to show the issue of global warming in the very convenient way.
